SOAS London Alumni Network - preliminary planning meeting: 15 September 2010

SOAS is planning to (re)establish its SOAS London Alumni Network. This will become a great resource, with the potential for alumni networking, events, student support, keeping in touch and career enhancement.

We’ve organised an alumni meeting next Wednesday to discuss plans. The meeting is open to all SOAS alumni, however RSVP is essential (I need to know numbers). Please email me at f.roberts@soas.ac.uk to confirm.

Governance and Leadership in Africa, SOAS: 13-17 September 2010

The Governance and Leadership in Africa programme at SOAS provides a unique opportunity for participants to develop and discuss their knowledge of topical issues affecting the African continent. The programme will bring together public sector officials, civil servants and managers from African institutions, as well as participants from other countries working on Africa, to exchange ideas about issues of leadership and governance.

Sessions will draw from the unrivalled expertise at SOAS as well as renowned academics from other institutions, providing three sessions each day followed by a practical, interactive workshop.

United Nations Sustainability Workshop: 7-8 October 2010

The University for Peace Centre for Executive Education is returning to London to offer a 2-day intensive workshop on sustainable business.

The two day course explores theory and best practice in leading successful sustainable organisations. It is valuable for anyone looking to plan and implement sustainability / corporate responsibility initiatives and engage with stakeholders.

This year’s course includes a session by UNEP on how the UN is becoming a greener oarganisation. Participants receive a certificate from the UN mandated UPEACE Centre and membership to an international alumni network.

SAOS students and alumni will get a UPEACE bursary to cover 20% of the registration fee.

In Conversation with Gita Saghal; Women's Rights and Human Rights in the context of the "war on terror": 21 October 2010

Drawing on her experience as the former Head of Amnesty International's Gender Unit and a feminist and anti-fundamentalist campaigner, Gita Sahgal will describe the difficulties of making women subjects of human rights and ask what the universality of rights means today and who controls its meaning.

In conversation with Professor Deniz Kandiyoti, she will argue that the global financial crisis, dirty deals at the end of the 'War on Terror' and the declaration of support for extreme Islamist politics by Amnesty International, signal a series of threats to the human rights of women. 'Gender mainstreaming' has failed as a strategy and women's rights are now clearly seen as either entirely marginal or threatening the stability of a new world order.

Conference 'Jews and Judaism in Black Africa and its diasporas', SOAS: 30-31 October 2010

The first International Conference of The International Society for the Study of African Jewry (ISSAJ) is dedicated to a broad and interdisciplinary overview of the study of black African Jewry. What is the state of this field of study? What are the main points of discussion?

A number of recent studies have dealt with the construction of Judaism or Jewishness among Black Africans and its relation to the historical experience of migrations, slavery and colonialism. The growth of Judaism, or Jewishness among Black Africans has been nurtured by shared historical discourses about presumed Semitic origins and about Jews, Zionism and blackness that transcend national boundaries.

Particular perceptions of Jewish history have been viewed as a paradigm of African suffering and possible redemption, and can be found in a variety of political and religious discourses among Black Africans.

The topic of Black African Jewry, is not only restricted to the continent of Africa itself, but also includes Israel, the United States, the Carribean and Europe, where increasingly Black African societies are found which profess Jewish identities and practice Judaism in one form or another.

We are pleased to present theUnexpected Items, a sketch comedy group directed by SOAS alumnus Charlie Henniker (MA South Asian Area Studies, 2008) and the creators of YouTube 'Gap Yah'. The group writes and performs all thier own material, and you can expect white-hot-one-liners, slick changeovers and references that even you will get. Endangered Languages Week 2010: 22 -27 February 2010

There are approximately 7,000 languages spoken today and half of them are under threat from larger languages.

Endangered Languages Week 2010 presents a variety of displays, discussions, films, and workshops to provide a view of what is happening to languages and what is being done to document, archive and support endangered languages at HRELP and around the world.

We invite our alumni to this enlightening week, where you will get an opportunity to expereinece the culture of endangered languages, why they are threatened, and where they are spoken. There will also be short informal sessions where you can hear about the practical and human issues in doing fieldwork in locations such as such as Algeria, Australia, Iran, Senegal, and the Solomon Islands. The week will be followed by presentations by other organizations researching on endangered languages, along with workshops and a chance to view international films on endangered languages.
